    Neurodiverse - Software Engineer Intern - Summer

    Salary/Compensation: $18.00 per hour + flight privileges

    This Internship Program is an affirmative action effort for neurodiverse individuals with autism spectrum disorder. We intend to hire qualified individuals and create an opportunity for them to gain relevant work experience with a strong support. Individuals who have a qualifying neuro-diverse disability will primarily benefit from the Internship Program.

    Team Placement Opportunities

    The Intern will work full-time during the internship timeframe in one of the following three roles within the Technology Department.

    Southwest.com Software Engineer Intern

    The Southwest.com Software Engineer Intern will be paired with a senior technical mentor on a full stack team that delivers on both the java service layer and JavaScript (reactjs) UI layer. As part of a 10 person Scrum Team, the Intern will learn how code is developed and delivered in a professional environment with over 150 engineers contributing to the code base across 18 Teams. Development work will involve contributing to new projects or enhancing existing features on Southwest.com

    Crew Operations Software Engineer Intern

    The software engineer intern experience in Crew technology will focus the team member on learning basic development practices within a 7-9 person agile team. They will be partnered with an experienced senior engineer who will teach them how we develop applications using java, AWS cloud services, or front end technology with Angular. Development assignments will be delivering new business capabilities for Flight Ops or Inflight operations and enhancing existing applications with the potential to work on proof of concepts for new technologies as well.

    ETO Analyst Intern

    The ETO Analyst in support of Southwest.com will be paired with an experienced mentor and will work on a Team of 10 engineers and analysts. Data analysis is critical for this Team as we seek to discover trends and opportunities to better support our applications in Production. The intern will become adept at Service Management and all the associated data regarding changes, incidents, problems, and knowledge base articles.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Your main responsibilities in this role include the following:

    • Analyze, design, write program code, test, document, and implement functionally appropriately, technically sound, and well-integrated application systems in accordance with Customer requirements, and organizational methodologies and standards.

    • Respond to production problems and implement immediate resolution efforts across technology areas.


    Job Requirements

    • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.

    • Must be at least 18 years of age.

    • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.

    • This position requires authorization to work in the United States as a permanent employee without sponsorship.

    • Progress toward undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems or Information Technology, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Business or related degree required.

    • Minimum level preferred: Sophomore (30 hours of undergraduate coursework completed at the start of the internship).

    • Must be currently enrolled as a full-time or part time student (minimum 6 credit hours).

    • Maintained 3.0 or above cumulative GPA. Calculate GPA online

    • Coursework in computer science fundamentals, programming languages such as Java, and related technical studies preferred.

    • Classroom and/or industry experience using at least one programming language such as Java is preferred.

    • Candidates should possess a basic knowledge of software development methodologies, practices, concepts, technologies preferred.

    • Experience in a job, internship, or classroom project analyzing technical problems, articulating the root problem, and translating the analysis into viable solutions is preferred.

    • Exposure to Agile methodologies preferred.

    • Previous internship, work experience, or project work in a classroom environment as a Software Engineer, Developer, or Architect within the past 12 months preferred but not required.

    • Demonstrate programming aptitude and ability for logical and abstract thinking.

    • Facilitate or complete analysis, design, and programming of viable solutions to business problems according to user specifications.

    • Participate in system and acceptance testing.

    • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.

    • Ability to stay organized and manage multiple and concurrent assignments under tight deadlines preferred.

    • Able to work in a culture that is open, direct, respectful, courteous and compassionate.

    • Quick learner, self-motivated, and able to work in a team when necessary.
