    The Managing Director, Cargo sets the long-term strategy and oversees the operational and financial performance of Alaska Air Cargo, including both the Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air Cargo businesses. This role ensures a culture of safety while growing the profitability of the business. As a people leader, this role will also establish strategic goals and direction for a team of leaders who oversee all aspects of the Cargo business.

    This position provides executive oversight and directs cargo activities for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Your main responsibilities in this role include the following:

    • Establishes strategic goals and direction aimed at increasing the customer base, maximizing revenue, increasing efficiency in order to achieve growth and profitability for the Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air Cargo businesses.

    • Influences across the company and provides strategic recommendations to enterprise leaders to ensure our operation has the resources necessary to run efficiently and with the utmost safety standards while providing our guests with a remarkable experience.

    • Ensures safety and regulatory compliance with the Cargo group.

    • Directs sales, marketing, and advertising goals.

    • Sets long term strategy for and executes business development/new business operations.

    • Engages with Alaska's Government Affairs team to provide briefing materials and/or personally brief Federal and State staff/officials on policy impacts to the Cargo business.

    • Represents Alaska and Horizon on the A4A Cargo Council and provides key input on industry issues/development from a cargo perspective.

    • Manages customer interfaces across the Cargo operation (e.g., operations, corporate, sales, etc.).

    • Oversees the cargo business systems, technology, and processes needed to continually improve cargo performance.

    • Develops people through effective performance management and ongoing feedback, focusing on fostering strategic and systems thinking, development of talent, and succession planning across teams and functions

    • Ensures policies and procedures are clear.

    • Meets corporate goals for profitability through the management of the Cargo P&L.

    • Approves and manages budget for Alaska Air Cargo.

    • Influences across the company and provides strategic recommendation to enterprise leaders with a goal of maintaining a safe, efficient cargo operation and maximizing revenue.

    • Influences company culture through action, presence and reinforcement of behaviors.

    • Oversight of the Safety Management System (SMS) and compliance as it relates to cargo operations.

    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    Job Requirements

    • A minimum of 10 years of customer service experience, preferably in a fast-paced, customer-focused environment.

    • 5 years of direct people leadership experience, including experience leading large groups of employees and leading multiple functions simultaneously

    • A Bachelor's degree.

    • Proven change management skills and a thirst for applying research and best practices to existing business problems.

    • High energy, positive, and executive-level presence, along with top-notch written and verbal communication, public speaking, and influence and motivational skills.

    • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to drive outcomes in the best interest of the company directly (particularly with direct reports) and indirectly with others in the organization that may be executive sponsors, sponsors, or other stakeholders.

    • An energetic, efficient, and resourceful problem solver.

    • Able to lead effectively, communicate well, and to motivate and develop direct/indirect reports.

    • Working knowledge of fiscal control systems, staffing processes, safety, and security compliance.

    • Proactive, enthusiastic, creative, and willing to try new approaches.

    • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

    • Excellent negotiation skills, including preparing, responding to, and managing proposals.

    • Excellent strategic development skills.

    • Familiarity with the logistical demands and economic activity within the state of Alaska.

    • Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience managing employees in a union environment.

    • Broad industry knowledge, including experience in freight and station operations.
